Crushing Guilt

Matilda was really demanding today. Her crying was grating on my nerves so I held her most of the day. When she finally fell asleep in her bed I ran around like a crazy person trying to get a day's worth of cleaning done in half an hour. Sam followed me around, saying, "Play? Mom and Sam? Play catch? C'mon, Mom!"

The poor little dude. He was ignored most of the day. I promised him that as soon as I was done folding the laundry we'd play catch. He was so excited and ran to get his ball. I finished up and went upstairs - to hear Matilda screaming again.

I turned to Sam. "Buddy, I'm sorry," I said. "I have to feed the baby."

"Play catch?" he asked with a quaver in his voice.

"I know I promised to play catch with you," I answered. "We will play catch after Matilda has her bottle."

He stood there a moment, holding his favorite ball with his shoulders drooping. Finally he said, "It's okay, Mom. I wait."

My heart broke. "I do want to play with you, buddy," I said. "I'm sorry."

Sam turned and walked away. "I'm sorry, too, Mom," he said softly.

Well, if my heart had been broken before, that shattered it.

We DID play catch. As soon as Matilda ate I put her in her chair. She watched as Sam and I played catch, chased each other, wrestled, and had a pillow fight. Sam had a great time and loved having over an hour of complete attention from me.

So why am I only remembering the look on his face when he was asked to wait?

Oh my gosh...I think I would've absolutely lost it. I can just picture his little face. I'm glad you were able to spend some quality time together!

I just lost it. Mostly because that exact scenario happens almost daily at this point. Grant nurses like every 1 1/2 so there is a constant conflict.
the hardest part for me.

Oh Em. I bet bot of you made the most of that hour!! Sam is so understanding for a three-year-old. OK, so I'm nearly 30 and he's way more understanding than me. =)
