Samuel Hancock

Last Tuesday Sam and I were making Valentine's Day cards. I casually suggested he sign his name - and he did! The scan is really poor quality - it's hard to see - but here is Sam's first attempt at writing his name. Clicking on the picture will open a larger version that is a little more clear.

When I told him to write his name, he made the line on the lower left. I told him to try again. Above the line is an "S". It's pretty good - parts of it were too faint to see in the scan. In the middle is his "A" - he told himself to draw a circle with a line - and he did! The little scribble on the far right is an "M." He struggles with lowercase M's so he does uppercase - saying to himself, "Up down, up down."

I am a really proud mama!

I've never seen anything so astonishing in my life! He's not quite three years old! I printed off a copy for his scrap book.

I was in the fourth grade before I could write my name.

Wow, that is really good! Did you teach him the circle with a line and up down up down? I would be telling Beckett "come on, draw an 'a'" with no helpful hints whatsoever.

Maybe Sam should tutor Bret.
