A few nights ago Sam got to stay up later than usual to dye Easter eggs. He was very pleased with the whole process. He's surprisingly adept at handling fragile eggs! I cracked two, Eric cracked one, and Sam didn't crack any.
I couldn't help feeling a little inadequate as we sat around our table. I remember coloring eggs when I was young and my mom made it all so awesome! Everything was perfect. When we did it the other night we were all in our pajamas. The kitchen wasn't clean and we spilled dye everywhere.
Then I wondered to myself - but what is Sam going to remember? Is he going to remember using makeshift egg holders and wearing old pajamas? I doubt it. I bet he'll remember watching his mom and dad laughing their heads off , trying to get an egg out of a cup without spilling anything. He'll remember how pretty his eggs were and how he got to use all the stickers he wanted to decorate them. He'll remember having the door open and smelling spring.
Maybe - just maybe - things weren't as perfect as I thought they were when I was younger. Maybe dye did spill. Maybe we didn't decorate eggs in our best clothes. Maybe tiny woodland creatures didn't come in to sing songs in their tiny voices as my mom simutaneously painted eggs, baked cookies, and mopped the floor. Maybe my memories of perfection come from me thinking, in my six-year-old mind, that at that moment everything felt perfect.
So here it is - proof of our imperfect, pajama-clad egg decorating party. It was messy and disorganized...and one of my new favorite memories.

You had singing woodland creatures too! You are hilarious, but I think you're absolutely right. Things couldn't have been as perfect as they seemed.
Ya know? I have seen so many pictures of you now! I can tell how well you are doing because you have pictures of yourself with your adorable kids!
I think you are right about the feeling you had growing up. It felt perfect because you were obviously loved and taken care of. I'm sure if you asked your mom if the dye spilled and chipmunks were singing she would have stories to tell...
You are such a good mom Em. Sam and Matilda will grow up thinking they have the perfect mom...and they do....
An Easter egg fun day! Matilda is so cute!
Oh yes, childhood memories, when everything was bigger and better and the best . . . Karen is correct . . . I remember one dye session where either Jackie or Emilie was sick and threw up. And photos of the girls in their Easter outfits were always taken BEFORE eating any Easter candy!
You look fantastic even in your old pajamas! What an adorable family you have...and how lucky they are all to have you : )
