One-Sided Conversation

Yesterday Sam busted into my room carrying a balloon on a stick and a baby chair. (I always think it's best not to ask why.) Obviously delighted with himself, he held the balloon out to me. "Hi, Mama!" he said.

"Hi, Sam!" I replied.

"No, Mama," Sam said. "BALLOON say hi Mama."

"Ah," I said. "Hi, balloon, how are you today?"

Sam giggled and shook the balloon as he made it reply, "I'm doing good!"

He set down the balloon and picked up the chair. "Hi, Mama!" he said.

Feeling like I had a handle on the game, I said, "Oh, hi, chair! How are you?"

Disgusted, Sam put the chair down. "Mama," he said. "Chairs can not talk."

The little stinker set me up, didn't he?
